Stamp setup

How do I configure my own stamp?

How do I configure a stamp to allow a comment? 

  • Select a logging type with values, i.e. either:
    1. Settings -> Logging Type -> Simple 1-click with user vales
    2. Settings -> Logging Type -> Start/Stop with user vales
  • Then Settings -> User value 1 details > set inactive
  • The same for User value 2
  • Now when stamping, Life Logger XL won’t ask you to enter values, but it will still allow for entering a comment

How to rename a stamp?

  • Please use the Stamp Manager:
    • Menu -> Maintenance -> Stamp Manager

How to delete a stamp with all its logged values?

  • Either you use the Stamp Manager:
    • Menu -> Maintenance -> Stamp Manager
  • Alternatively, you enter the statistics and open the list of all related logs (small icon at the top right, paper sheet with magnifying glass). Then select at least one log, open the context menu (top right) and select "Delete all". 
  • CAUTION: To prevent accidental data loss, start off by creating a back-up:
    • Main menu -> Back-up / Restore -> back-up databases

How can I copy my data from one device to another?

  • Create a back-up from the source device, either into the cloud or send by e-mail
  • Then restore the data on the destination device
  • For more details, please refer to the Back-up / Restore section below

How much memory does the app consume?

  • You’ll be surprised how little

  • To get the exact values:

    • Menu -> Maintenance -> Status

Which App version do I use?

  • The App-variant (FREE or PRO) and the version is displayed in the status dialog:

Back-up / Restore 

How can I back-up my data?

  • Life Logger XL saves all user data in two databases. One for the logs themselves with time stamps, values and comments. And another for the logged GPS data.

  • The databases can be backed up very easily: Menu -> Back-up / Restore -> Back-up databases
  • Then you decide where the back-up needs to go. Either locally (directly onto the Android device), into the cloud (currently supporting Dropbox) or sent as Email. 
  • If the databases are saved locally, they are stored in a /LifeLoggerXL directory inside your Download folder. In Dropbox the databases are saved in a /LifeLoggerXL directory directly under the root.
  • You can then restore the databases from the local memory or from Dropbox. If you sent your back-up by e-mail, you’ll need to store it in Dropbox or on your device in your /LifeLoggerXL  directory (inside your Download folder) before restoring it.

Map functionality

How to put my personal marker on the map?

  • Press and hold anywhere on the map. This will allow you to pick an icon for the location and give the location a name. Touch the icon later to edit or delete it again.

GPS Logging

Positioning data are not logged when my device is in standby. What can I do?

  • Some devices, e.g. tablets use power saving settings. Depending on these settings GPS is switched of during standby, and apps have no access to positioning data. The solution is to adjust the power saving settings to allow for GPS positioning during standby.

What is travel time?

  • When you are driving in your car or riding your bicycle,  Life Logger XL logs two relevant durations. The elapsed time from departure to arrival and the time with actual movement, the travel time. If e.g. you spend 1 hour getting from home to work, of which 10 minutes are spent sitting stuck in a traffic jam or waiting for green lights, the travel time is 50 minutes. Life Logger XL records both durations.

Why can’t I import and export my data?

  • Life Logger XL, FREE offers back-up and restore, to prevent accidental data loss. Life Logger XL, PRO on top offers import and export functions enabling cooperation with e.g. Microsoft Excel, Google Maps or Google Earth.

Why does my CSV Export show strange numbers instead of start and stop timestamps?

  • When exporting, start and stop are formatted as numbers. You need to pick the appropriate format in Life Logger XLs CSV-Settings:
    • Menu -> General Settings -> CSV Settings -> CSV Date Format
    • Then choose between: Excel (Win), Excel (Mac) and Unix Epoch (mSec)
  • Example: Dec. 31st 2018 12:00 in Excel (Win) is 43,465.50
  • Now when opening the .CSV file in excel, select the columns containing start and stop timestamps, and ask Excel to format the columns as dates, possibly a custom format including not only date, but also time

What do I need to consider when importing CSV files?

  • CAUTION: Importing adds data to the already existing data in the database. If the imported data items contain errors, it can be a lot of work to delete them again (possibly one by one). For that reason, it is a MUST, to back-up your databases before starting an import. With the back-up at hand, you can easily go back if the import goes wrong.
    • Hence: Menu -> Back-up / Restore -> Back-up databases
  • When importing, no data items are overwritten. Consequently, you can easily end up with double data after an import – if wanted or not.
  • When importing, it is a MUST to save the data in the right format and in the right columns. The simplest approach is to start off by exporting a CSV file from Life Logger XL. This file can then be filled in with the data to be imported, after having deleted all the exported rows (otherwise they’ll occur twice later, see above). 
  • When importing, not all columns are imported. As to which columns are imported and which are ignored, please study the headline row of an exported CSV file.

How to undo a CSV import?

  • There is no easy way, unless you created a back-up before importing.

    • Hence: Menu -> Back-up / Restore -> Back-up databases

  • Should you not have a back-up, you can of course delete individual logs from the log lists in the statistics area. You can also use the Stamp Manager (Menu -> Maintenance -> Stamp Manager) to delete all logs for a given stamp name

  • As a last resort you can of course export a new CSV file, then do the cleaning up in Excel, and then reimport into a new empty database.

  • But let’s avoid all this trouble: Always start off by creating a back-up, it is very easy and fast.

What if my CSV file for import contains errors?

  • Life Logger XL imports data items row by row. If a row contains an error, it is skipped. Further rows without errors will still be imported

How do I know if the CSV import was successful?

  • After the import ends, Life Logger XL shows you how many rows were imported and how many were skipped. Life Logger XL also explains why a row was skipped.

Which format is required for a CSV file to import successfully?

  • Must be a .csv or a .txt file
  • ASCII, UTF-8 or UTF-16 (Unicode) file formats can all be imported. Only UTF_8 and UTF-16 include good support for special characters such as the German äöü or Japanese. In order to ensure an error free import, Life Logger XL needs to know the format used:
    • Menu -> General Settings -> CSV Settings -> CSV Import: File Format
  • Start and stop time stamps can be imported as a simple number e.g. the above mentioned 43,465.50. Life Logger XL also recognizes a lot of other formats, e.g.:
    • 31.12.2018 12:30
    • 12/31/2018 17:30
    • 18-12-31 9:00:00
  • In order to prevent misunderstandings, Life Logger XL needs to know the year-month-day order, and for this Life Logger XL also has a CSV Setting:
    • Menu -> General Settings -> CSV Settings -> CSV Import: Yr-Mth-Day Order
  • Finally Life Logger XL needs to know the character used for column division:
    • Menu -> General Settings -> CSV Settings -> CSV Import: Separator Character

Which dates are accepted by CSV Import?

  • Life Logger XL accepts dates between Jan 1st 1970 and "here and now". Future dates are not supported.

What about my GPS logs, how are they exported?

  • Depending on usage, hundreds of thousands or even millions of positions are recorded. Such a large amount of data is not well suited for CSV export.
  • Instead GPS logs are exported in KML format. Just like a CSV file, a KML file is also a human readable text file, and it opens in e.g. Google Maps, Google Earth or possibly your favorite navigation App.
  • Life Logger XL can export all recorded positions for a given stamp into a (very) big KML file.
    • Menu -> Import / Export -> KML Export
  • Life Logger XL can also export one or more manually selected trips into one KML file.  
    • Enter the statistics section, then show a list of trips, either by:
      • pressing the “Edit data” button on the top right
      • picking a part of a chart
      • picking a date on the calendar
    • Then pick any number of trips from the list, open the context menu and hit “KML export”
